物流管理專業的定義：
所謂物流管理是指在社會再生產過程中，根據物質資料實體流動的規律，應用管理的基本原理和科學方法，對物流活動進行計劃、組織、指揮、協調、控制和監督，使各項物流活動實現好的協調與配合，以降低物流成本，提高物流效率和經濟效益。
供應鏈管理的定義：
供應鏈管理是指一種集成化的管理思想和方法，是對供應鏈中的物流、信息流、資金流、增值流、業務流以及貿易夥伴關系等進行的計劃、協調和控制一體化管理過程。鏈條形成了核心結點，結構復雜緊密戰略夥伴關系快速反應供應鏈的戰略架構。
美國物流管理/供應鏈管理專業設置與申請：
商學院：
美國的供應鏈管理專業主要設置在商學院，申請者需要准備GMAT的考試。申請商學院下面的物流管理專業，一般需要至少申請者1-2年的全職工作經驗，有管理專業背景的申請者適合申請商學院下的物流。
工程學院：
除了商學院之外，美國的物流管理專業也會開設在工程學院，常見的是工業工程下面的而一個分支，需要申請者准備GRE的成績。若申請者沒有管理專業的背景，如果有數理分析，計算機方面的知識，無全日制的工作經驗，比較適合申請工學院下面的物流專業，而且獲得獎學金的機會也比商學院下的大。
但是注意商學院下的物流管理和工程學院的物流管理較大的區別在於工程學院下的物流偏重分析而商學院下的物流偏重物流策略的管理和執行。如果申請者既沒有管理方面的背景，也沒有數理方面的背景，卻想申請物流專業。申請者在了解兩個學院下物流供應鏈的不同設置後，確定喜歡工學院下的物流還是商學院下的物流，再針對性去補充相關的知識。
