1960年2月1日，在位於格林斯博羅（Greensboro）市中心的沃爾沃斯（Woolworth）便餐館，四名黑人大學生坐下用餐。這四名大學生是約瑟夫"麥克尼爾（Joseph McNeil），伊爾"布萊爾（Izell Blair），富蘭克林"麥昆（Franklin McCain）和大衛"理查蒙德（David Richmond），他們是北卡羅來納A&T大學（North Carolina A&T College）的大一學生。買完食品後，四位學生坐在了預留給白人顧客的座位上。當服務生要求他們離開時，他們禮貌地解釋說，因為自己在本店買了食品就應該有座可坐而不是站著。令他們驚奇的是，他們沒有被捕。後來，麥昆回憶起那時的情形說，「我突然間意識到，他們可能對我們什麼也做不了，我們或許應該挺下去」。四人坐了差不多一個小時，直到便餐館關門。
回到學校之後，四人立即組織起更多的學生。第二天早晨，差不多二十幾個學生來到這家店，坐在櫃台旁。因為沒有遇到任何反對，第二輪的入座行動吸引了當地媒體的注意。一家國家新聞通訊社以此作為封面報道：穿著體面的黑人大學生以祈禱結束他們的靜坐。那天靜坐的學生中，有三位成立了「正義行動學生執行委員會」（Student Executive Committee for Justice）以便協調此次行動，後來千名學生大遊行成為行動的高潮。五個月後，在經歷了炸彈威脅、抗議者和種族隔離支持者的沖突、以及一場抵制那些實行種族隔離制度的便餐館的有效行動之後，當地白人官員同意就種族隔離政策進行談判，以結束遊行和抵制行動。
格林斯博羅的抗議者最終同意結束他們的入座行動，但是其他地區的黑人學生卻開展了他們自己的便餐館抗議行動。到了二月第二個星期的周末，入座行動已經由北卡羅萊納蔓延到維吉尼亞（Virginia）。在這場運動的首次逮捕行動中，北卡羅來那拉雷（Raleigh）地區的警察將41名學生投入監獄。在同一星期，也就是2月13日，納什維爾（Nashville）的124名學生占據了該城中好幾家便餐館的位子。到了月末，入座行動在7個州的超過30個地區發生。
在納什維爾，學生被很好的組織起來進行持續的抗議活動。范德比爾特神學院（Vanderbilt Divinity School）的學生詹姆斯"勞森（James Lawson）主持的關於甘地非暴力主義的討論課吸引了一大批來自納什維爾黑人大學的學生。他們中的很多人，包括約翰"劉易斯（John Lewis）、黛安"納什（Diane Nash），後來成為南方民權運動的領袖。參加勞森討論課的還有來自菲斯克大學（Fisk University）的研究生馬里恩"巴里（Marion Barry）。巴里意識到參與入座運動很可能使他失去獎學金，但他更明白「如果不是一個自由人，就根本不是一個人」的道理。當便餐館取消了種族隔離規定，證明納什維爾的斗爭是成功的。
盡管最初格林斯博羅的抗議者採取禮貌與和平的方式，但是入座行動的參與者們越來越激進了。當他們取得白人的讓步時，學生中的積極分子改變了對自我的認識。他們獲得了一種全新的種族自豪感，因為自己的意見受到認真對待而倍感興奮。學生們更加自信的認為，他們自己有能力指揮這次行動而不需要成年人的領導。
在南方以外的很多地方，黑人們受到了學生抗議行為的鼓動。「以前，南方的黑人們總是處於自衛甚至萎縮的狀態，」一位25歲的紐約教師羅伯特"摩西（Robert Moses）回憶了當時看到報紙上靜坐者的照片後的情形說，「我知道這肯定和我自己的生活有關，它讓我意識到很長時間以來我一直被身為黑人但同時又是一名美國人這樣的問題所困擾。可是現在答案出現了。」
1960年的學生入座行動促使學生非暴力協調委員會（Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, SNCC）於同年四月成立。南方基督教領袖會議（Southern Christian Leadership Conference, SCLC）的主管埃拉"貝克（Ella Baker），邀請學生入座行動的領袖來到位於北卡羅來那拉雷（Raleigh, North Carolina）地區的蕭爾大學（Shaw University）講述他們非暴力反抗和如何堅持運動的情況。300多名南方黑人學生、十幾個南方的白人學生、來自13個學生與社會改革組織的人員以及北部和邊遠州立大學的代表出席了此次演講會。盡管與會的其他一些南方基督教領袖會議的官員希望學生可以加入該組織，但是貝克卻並不怎麼認同該組織層級嚴密的領導體制，他鼓勵學生們保持自治狀態。貝克對學生非暴力協調委員會那種集體決策的過程表示支持，雖然他於1960年夏離開了南方基督教領袖會議，但卻仍是學生非暴力協調委員會的顧問。

馬丁"路德"金對這一行動的反應顯得更為復雜，他在學生非暴力協調委員會的成立大會上發表了演說，而且為這一由學生發起並堅持的新運動感到驕傲。他極為贊賞地說道，「美國學生已經成年，你們可以在世界上為爭取自由而進行的奮斗中佔有自己榮光的地位。」盡管如此，學生非暴力協調委員會中仍然有不少積極分子批評金太過謹慎。
便餐館入座行動展現了大眾奮爭的潛在能量，並且使新一代的年輕人在自身的領導能力方面更加自信。顯然，到1960年秋，非常獨立的學生抗議運動已經深深地改變了南方的民權運動。參加十月份召開的第二次學生非暴力協調委員會會議的人們決心繼續這種「直接行動」的方式，它可以從那些更加傳統和謹慎的組織那裡爭取主動。勞森的籌款演講中散發出的戰斗性成為學生非暴力協調委員會接下來運動的特點：「我們不要再讓那些成年人為籌集保證金而四處奔忙，而是讓他們為結束那種將我們送進監獄的制度而努力奮斗。假如歷史給了我們這樣的機會，我們一定要做好准備，牢牢地抓住它。」

美國院校的學位項目總體分為undergraate（本科）和graate（研究生），美國的研究生分為碩士和博士，這和國內略有不同，我們國內所講的研究生指的是美國的碩士。
頒發的學位有四類：副學士、學士、碩士、博士，前兩個是本科階段頒發的學位，後兩個是研究生階段頒發的學位。
一、副學士學位（Associate Degree）
也稱作準學士學位，讀完兩年制社區大學或職業技術學院所得到學位。在學術學習課程以外，美國的高等院校還為高級職業培訓提供實踐課程。這種課程一般由兩年制的「社區大學」提供。學生完成兩年的學習後，除了發給證書和文憑以外，還可以獲得「副學士學位」。
具體的學位如下：
AA（Associate of Arts）：文學副學士學位
AS（Associate of Science）：理學副學士學位
AAS（Associate in AppliedScience）：應用科學副學士學位
ABA（Associate of BusinessAdministration）：工商管理副學士學位
ABS（Associate ofBaccalaureate Studies）：副學士學位
AOS（Associate ofOccupational Studies）：職業副學士學位

副學士學位中AAS是最為普遍，學生學習通識課程，也可以在選取一些特定領域的課，將來轉學到本科大學去獲取學士學位。AOS是一個通識教育學位，不會上很多非常細的專業課。值得一提的是美國的GoldenFour，基本上每個學校的學生都要上的課，也是能夠以transfer（轉學生）身份申請至少要修過的課程：Math、English、CriticalThinking、Public Speaking。
二、學士學位（Bachelor Degree）
美國學生獲得的學位一般是「文學學士(BA)」或「理學學士(BS)」，在完成為期四年的學業以後頒發。在頭兩年學習期間，美國學生要學習普通學科領域的一些必修課程，第二年結束後選擇一門(或兩門)專業課，剩下的兩年就學習這些學科領域內的課程(盡管他們並不受其限制)。獲得學士學位以後，多數美國人會結束他們的「學習生涯」，開始找工作。我們把以獲得BA/BS學位為目標的四年制課程學習稱作「本科學習」。

在美國有超過1000所學校提供碩士學位，大體分為偏學術型和偏授課型。偏學術型的多授予於Master of Science等學位，某些學院開設的MS學位是為讀博做准備的，還有些學院的博士項目，如果讀不下來，修夠一定的學分可以授予碩士學位；偏授課型或應用型，多授予Master of Arts學位，應用型碩士的代表當屬MBA了。大多數純文科的碩士如教育學碩士、社會學碩士、傳媒學碩士等需要讀兩年的時間，大多數理工科碩士如生物學碩士、計算機專業碩士等也是需要讀兩年的時間，藝術類碩士大部分也是讀2年的時間，商科除MBA外大部分碩士讀一年到一年半，法學碩士一年的學位類別有：
文學碩士M.A.(Master of Arts)：屬於人文、藝術或社會科學的領域，如文學、教育、藝術、音樂等。
理學碩士M.S.或M.Sc(Master of Science)：屬理工、科學的領域，如數學、物理、信息等。

四、博士學位
在美國，獲取博士學位需要三到六年的時間。法學和法律博士一般是三年，其他專業一般是五年。博士研究的第一階段一般為期兩年，結束時要對此前所學所有學科領域進行一次總體考試，稱為「初試」或「資格考試」，通過後就可以開始為博士畢業論文進行研究。

④ 為什麼去美國讀護理碩士
自1860年nightingale(南丁格爾)首創了科學的護理以來， 護理學在美國就開始作為一個「專業」受到關注，也是發明和應用"專科護士「制度最早的國家，並建立了比較完善和系統的專科護士培養模式，主要的專科護士類型 包括SN(Specialty nurse) 、CNS (Clincal Nurse Specialist)、NP (Nurse practioner)、 CNM (Certified nurse midwife)、CRNA (Certified registered Nurse Anesthetist) 等多種專科護士類型。
層次分明，系統完善
美國護理教育分為五個層次，分別為：博士、碩士、護理科學學士、准學士、職業護士。
美國護理教學計劃總體上是從崗位和護理需要出發,按照人的成長規律,從健康到疾病的變化過程以及知識結構由簡單到復雜的認識規律構築課程框架,並有機地融合相關的學科,將護理程序貫穿在護理教學。
課程多樣，設計靈活
課程設置建立在本科護理教育的基礎之上，側重於學習專科護理和護理理論知識。碩士專業大多為護理學碩士和理科碩士，學制為兩年。要求學生把在研究室or實驗室課程中的經驗和書本里學到的理論結合起來成為護理實踐。
中國目前護理學教育狀況：我國的護理研究生教育起步滯後於1990年其他，目前僅有30餘所大學可招收護理碩士生。專業課程資源相對匱乏，且沒有形成系統的教學系統。
就業率高，薪資穩定
由於從上世紀開始凸顯的老齡化問題及多方面原因目前護士在美國屬於需求度較高的職業，憑護理專業文憑，求職前景十分樂觀。
持大專文憑以上的注冊護士 (Registered Nurse)在就業初期，一般都可以拿到4-5 萬的基本年薪。而特殊專業、碩士以及博士的薪資將超過此年薪水平。
